Accreditation Status Report to the CR Community

2009/2010

College of the Redwoods is focused on addressing the two accreditation recommendations that the Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges (ACCJC), Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) demanded be addressed following its June 2009 meeting. CR was notified that it was put on warning status at that meeting and a Follow-up Report is due to the commission on Oct. 15, 2009.

The links to the Calendar of Annual Program Review Activities and Dates for Accreditation Follow-up Report Submission, as well as the draft Follow-up Report, can be found at the bottom of this web page.

Following are the two recommendations that CR must address according to the June 30, 2009 letter from ACCJC President Barbara Beno to CR President Jeff Marsee

Recommendation 1 (2008): The college should determine a template for student achievement data and related analyses that is to be included in all program reviews, and should use the institutional research staff and others knowledgeable about data analysis to guide the faculty and ultimately the college in discussions of what these data show about student success; these discussions should become part of the culture and practice of the institution.

Proof that Recommendation 1 (2008) has been addressed to the Commission’s satisfaction must be must be demonstrated by the ACCJC meeting in January 2010. That is because each  college has two years from when a sanction is issued to correct the deficiency. Beno stated in her letter that a college can face termination of accreditation if the deficiency is not corrected within two years.

Recommendation 1 (2009): In order to meet the Standard and improve both communication and operations of the college, the team recommends that the college undergo a review of roles and responsibilities of each constituent group. In so doing, the college should develop means by which to trust can be enhanced and respect increased among the constituent groups to create an environment that supports empowerment, innovation and leads to institutional excellence.

Beno stated in her letter that CR “must correct the deficiencies noted in Recommendation 1 (2009) by June 2011 or the Commission will be compelled to act.”

Here is an update of what CR is doing to satisfy the recommendations of the ACCJC:

  • A CR Follow-up Report writing team has been working since Sept. 1. The members of the team are Dr. Justine Shaw, Anthropology; Dr. Michael Dennis, Economics; and Accreditation Liaison Officer Marjorie Carson, CR’s Vice President of Instruction. Roxanne Metz, Assistant to the President, is providing resource support to the writing team.  The team is meeting and writing every Tuesday and Thursday from 1-5 p.m.  After each writing session, revised draft of the report will be posted as soon as possible on this link.  Comments and feedback about the draft report can be sent to Marjorie Carson, Justine Shaw, Michael Dennis, or Roxanne Metz.
  • A draft of the Follow-up Report Rough Draft will be submitted for the Academic Senate’s review on Friday, Sept. 18.  See the Calendar for timeline information.
  • The Follow-up Report Rough Draft will be included in the CR Board of Trustees packet on Friday, Sept. 25.
  • The Follow-up Report will be mailed electronically and via snail-mail to the ACCJC on Monday, Oct. 12.
  • Two Addendums are identified to be mailed to the Commission by mid-November.  One of the Addendums will be Program Reviews completed after the Follow-Up Report is mailed and the other Addendum will be the Assessment Report.  Assessment within the completed Program Reviews will also be a part of the official October 15 report with the two addendums being supplemental to the primary report.
  • A calendar that addresses completion of Program Review, a key component in addressing the two recommendations, and the Academic Senate and Board of Trustees meetings will also be a part of this report.

The team invites additional information and direction for the college community in addressing the recommendations. Information can be sent by email to Justine Shaw, Michael Dennis, Marjorie Carson, or Roxanne Metz.  Because of time constraints related to report preparation, contributors may not receive individual responses.  However, the team is committed to report regularly via this site and will post current report drafts for further review.   We appreciate the very dedicated and hard work of the College of the Redwoods community.  Your support, guidance, contributions, and encouragement are critical as together, we address  the Accreditation Recommendations for the strength and success of our College.

Sincerely,

Dr. Marjorie Carson
