Geology/Geography/Oceanography:
CR professors David Bazard and Bob McPherson are active member of the geoscience community organization: Humboldt Friends of Geology (professional, academics, student group). They meet on a bimonthly basis. – Agenda Professor Bazard is an Adjunct Professor of Geology at Humboldt State University.
Professor McPherson is a HSU research associate and lecturer.
Professor Bazard is a member of the Redwood Coast Tsunami Working Group – a community organization of emergency service workers and scientists (includes representatives from Red Cross, Office of Emergency Services, Humboldt State, Redwood National Park, and National Weather Service).
Mathematics
The math departments at HSU and CR are in discussions on how to join forces to provide courses for HSU remedial math students. MSE faculty coordinated with HSU admissions director Rhonda Geldin and Science outreach Lisa Perry to offer an informative session for CR MSE students on opportunities not only at HSU but also in the workforce.
Professors Michael Butler and Tami Matsumoto also work to smooth the transition for local students by presenting at CR’s High School Counselor Day, clarifying and answering questions regarding placement and transferring beyond CR, and working to set up math review options for high school students.
The Eel River Valley Math Vertical Team (ERVMVT) includes teachers from Fortuna High School, Academy of the Redwoods, and their eight “feeder” middle schools. Professors Michael Butler and Tami Matsumoto have been participating with the ERVMVT since 2003, meeting monthly to work on curriculum alignment, teaching strategies, and have completed several projects together. The ERVMVT is a regular keynote presenter at the GATE Academy (every 5 years), and recently gave part 1 of a 2-part workshop at the Humboldt County Office of Education training other K-12 teachers in vertical teaming (in any subject area).
Professors Kevin Yokoyama, Michael Butler, Chris Panza, and Tami Matsumoto are participating in a new Professional Learning Council (PLC), led by Dr. Tyler Evans (HSU), and Amanda Platt (Asst. Principal, Hoopa Elementary). This mathematics PLC was organized through the California Partnership for Achieving Student Success (Cal-PASS) and the Early Assessment Program (EAP). EAP is a collaborative effort among the State Board of Education (SBE), the California Department of Education (CDE) and the California State University (CSU); see http://www.calstate.edu/EAP/. Through this PLC, CR faculty work on curriculum alignment with HSU and K-12 teachers, and make the transitions smoother for local students coming to CR.
Creation of a specific CR Mathematics Advisory Group in progress – being organized by Professor Erin Wall.
Physics
Participation in at CR’s High School Counselor Day – discussions of expectations and preparation of students in the sciences.
MSE Division Chair discussions with HSU Physics Chair.
