The Academy will grow to approximately 120 students. Initially, the students study with Academy teachers in a core high school program that prepares them to enter college courses tuition-free. The school also pays the cost of books. Through concurrent enrollment in both a high school and college, students earn both a college degree and high school diploma. Initially funded by a grant from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, the school’s mission is to support college success. To accomplish its mission, the school holds high expectations for all students, develops a strong sense of community and personal responsibility, and provides excellent teaching. The Academy’s financial incentives, challenging curriculum, supportive learning environment, and connections to the community provide an attractive alternative to students across Humboldt County.
