Resources available: The Skills Lab houses a variety of
equipment and supplies to assist students in learning and
mastering basic to advanced skills. The lab has four
simulated hospital rooms, an out patient/clinic exam room, and
a laboratory/diagnostic testing area. Equipment for all
aspects of assessment are available as well as mannequins to
practice psychomotor skills such as examinations of the ear,
eye, breast, prostate, dressing changes, urinary catheter
insertions, venipuncture, and medication administration. For a
comprehensive list of lab resources contact the Skills Lab
Coordinator. |
| Practice: The Skills Lab is a place for
students to practice beginning through advanced skills. Lab
time can be used for independent and small group
study/practice, demonstrations by faculty and peers and
validating your learning. |
| Use
multi-media: While in the lab, students
can view videotapes, computerized clinical simulations, and
other multi-media that have been assigned or recommended by
faculty. The Lab has 8 new computers with
a wide variety of software and
offers internet and email access. Students can also use
videotaping equipment for self assessment/evaluation of
psychomotor skills and simulated client interactions. |
Competency verification of clinical
skills: Students are required to have their skills competencies validated. Students
first receive instruction in the skill by CR faculty.
Students are then responsible to practice the skill in the
lab. Evaluation of skills can be accomplished during scheduled
class time and/or by appointment. Appointment times are listed
in the lab next to the Log-In computer. Students are asked to
call the lab if they are unable to keep their scheduled
appointment.
Students in the ADN program
maintain a Clinical Opportunity Record (COR) to link skills
instruction and competency with clinical experiences. |
| Camaraderie: One of the best ways to
learn is through discussion and debate. The lab provides a
comfortable atmosphere for students to talk with peers and
more experienced practitioners about issues and dilemmas in
client care. |
