GENERAL POLICIES ADN and LVN Programs

Program Retention

  1. A grade of "C" or better in all nursing courses is necessary to progress in the nursing program. 
  2. A grade of “C” or better in all program and general education course requirements is necessary to earn a nursing degree or certificate and to be eligible for National Council Licensure Exam (NCLEX).
  3. A student will be dismissed from a nursing program when he/she:
    1. Earns a grade below "C" in a nursing course. (Unsatisfactory summative clinical evaluation earns an F grade)
    2. Demonstrates unethical, unprofessional/unsafe behavior as deemed by the Nursing faculty.  (See Safe Practice Policy in this handbook and NSNA Code of Ethics.)
  4.      A student may be dismissed from the nursing program when:
    1. His/her thought processes and decision making ability is impaired by excessive stress, poor mental or physical health or the use of drugs or alcohol (see Impaired Student Statement)
    2. He/she does not comply with college or program policies.  See the College of the Redwoods Student Code of Ethics and program policies listed in this Handbook.
    3. He/she is unable to fulfill course objectives/requirements due to excessive absences or other reasons.

      A faculty advisory committee will review all potential student dismissals
  5. Each course outline delineates course evaluation criteria and grading scale. Students are able to determine their own status from their graded written work and clinical evaluations.  Students who are unclear as to their status should make an appointment with the course instructor.

  6. All students leaving the nursing program, for any reason, must have an exit interview with the Director of Nursing and Health Occupations or Program Coordinator.  Failure to do so may jeopardize the ability to readmit.  Please contact the Health Occupation’s secretary for an appointment.
