The
need for certified marine science technicians is growing rapidly.
College of the Redwoods' Marine Science Technology Program is designed
to train students for employment with a wide variety of fishery and
wildlife agencies, marine and environmental consulting firms, marine
aquariums, and marine laboratories.
The
program is flexible however, and can be tailored to meet the individual
academic and career goals of each student. College of the Redwoods'
MST Program can prepare you for employment as an entry-level technician,
or for transfer into an upper division marine or environmental science
program with the eventual goal of obtaining a higher degree. Individuals
interested in improving their understanding of marine and coastal
environments, or upgrading their technical skills, will also find
this program valuable.
The
program emphasizes hands-on experiences that provide the students
with the practical skills they need to work in this field. Students
will also have the opportunity to serve as interns with potential
employers. This allows students to work with other technicians and
scientists before they graduate, and students can establish personal
contacts that could be instrumental in starting their careers. Numerous
state and federal agencies, research institutions, private consultants,
and marine aquariums support our program by offering internships or
occupational experience to students enrolled in the Marine Science
Technology Program.
Two
options exist for program participants. An Associate of Science degree
is awarded to students for satisfactory completion of the major requirements
(24 units), 12 additional units of recommended elective courses, and
successful completion of general education and graduation requirements.
A Certificate of Achievement is awarded for satisfactory completion
of the major requirements plus a minimum of six additional units of
recommended elective courses.
MARINE SCIENCE STUDENTS BUILD A SATELLITE DRIFTER
Students in the Marine Science Technology Program (MST) have recently built and deployed an ocean drifter designed to study California coastal currents. The drifter is a four-and-one-half foot tall by four foot wide structure made of PVC pipe, vinyl “sails” and a package containing a satellite transmitter. The drifter is designed to float just below the surface of the ocean so that its path is largely unaffected by the wind. A satellite tracking device protrudes above the ocean surface so the path of the drifter can be monitored by MST students, scientists and the public.
Marine Science Technology students on the Mendocino Campus are hoping to see how changes in wind and currents affect the path of their drifter. You can access a real-time google map with the drifter location updated every four hours at the following address: www.nefsc.noaa.gov/drifter/drift_redwoods_2010_1.html
