"I graduated from the MST program with an AS degree in 1999 and received a generous scholarship as a transfer student to UC Santa Cruz in the Marine Biology major. I was inspired by the field and lab work especially a course in plankton at CR to pursue a career in marine research. I found that I was very well prepared to succeed in the more advanced upper division courses of my chosen major and am glad that I was able to receive the more individual based personal attention of my instructor(s), especially Greg Grantham, in the small classes at CR. The extensive course work in marine sciences, especially the field course and internships in the MST program gave my resume an edge and made me competitive in obtaining jobs related to my major during and after my undergraduate education."

"Enrolling in the MST program at CR fulfilled for me a lifelong dream to learn about Oceanography. Living in a remote area such as the Mendocino Coast made it difficult to find a career job with my previous degree. Over the course of a few years, I learned a great deal about the different disciplines of Marine Science. I had the opportunity to network with local agencies and gain genuine field experience through an internship. I now have a career job working locally with fisheries management and a research/education position with the Mendocino Coast Audubon Society. "

"The Marine Sciences program at the College of the Redwoods literally changed my life. It was directly responsible for my obtaining a summer position in a marine research lab at the University of Rhode Island's Graduate School of Oceanography, the first of several times I worked on various grant projects there. The program also led to my editing a number of scientific articles, extending to co-authorship of a chapter in a college science textbook. More importantly, I gained a much deeper appreciation and understanding of the complexity, fragility, and profundity of the marine world; indeed, of the entire natural world and my own insignificant place within its matrix of beauty. “The College of the Redwoods Marine Science Technology Program has opened up opportunities in my life that I never could have imagined. The skills I acquired from the program allowed me to work in almost any area of fisheries. I have been able to work on projects in habitat conservation, stream restoration, fisheries management, botany, invertebrate management and biological research. I have also been able to meet some of the most influential Biologists and Scientists in the field today, which gave me the opportunity to be a part of their work. "I moved to Fort Bragg from the S.F. bay area specifically to attend the marine science program after reading about it on the C.R. website. I had taken one science class and had like it enough to know that science was for me. I was only the second of 11 children in my family to go to college – and I moved 189 miles to do it! I was not disappointed. I feel like I was spoiled there at C.R. by the knowledge of the staff and the setting of the campus, and was prepared for the rest of my college career at a level far beyond those who go through a regular transfer studies program. What Professor Grantham taught me reaches far into and far beyond the margins of science. Grantham’s program is comparable in many ways to the training one receives in a Bachelor’s program. He is so knowledgeable and so thorough in his teaching style that it puts his students at an incredible advantage. "
