Kit Davenport's Course Syllabi
Art 31-B, Ceramics (Wheel)
This class is an introductory class in using the potter's wheel
(appropriate for novices as well as those with at a beginning level
of experience.) Students learn techniques for producing basic pottery
forms --- cylinders (cups, mugs, vases), bowls and plates. The
course focuses on practice in mastering these forms, while also
incorporating various methods of form and surface enhancement,
including carved and applique relief, engobe and underglaze techniques,
and use of oxides and glazes (primarily high fire.) Some projects
may have a sculptural component or emphasize non-functional sculptural
form.
Periodic slide shows present examples of (primarily) wheel thrown
forms with a variety of aesthetic and conceptual approaches, from
diverse cultures and eras.
