CR Gallery  shows retrospective of college's graphic artist

College of the Redwood's Creative Arts Gallery presents " Transit(ion): a Retrospective Graphics Exhibit by Lynn Lozier-Hannon" in February.

This exhibit is in collaboration with College of the Redwoods' Anniversary Celebration: Changing Lives for Forty Years , and runs Feb. 1 through March 3 .

An opening reception for the artist will be held Tuesday, Feb. 1 from 4 to -6 p.m. and the public is invited to attend.

For 30 years, Lozier-Hannon has worked at CR, 27 of those years in graphics, both in Printing Services and Instructional Media. While a student at CR she studied art and worked in what was then called Central Duplicating creating support materials for faculty and staff. She now works as CR's Graphic Artist, a part of the college's Communications and Marketing Department. The work on exhibit reflects her journey as a graphic artist, her on-going, on-the-job education and the transitions that have occurred in graphics technology along the way.

When Lozier-Hannon began her professional design work, all mechanicals were done by hand, type was hand lettered and the art cut and pasted on the page to prepare it for printing. Now she generates this work digitally through software programs on the computer. With major changes in the field of graphic design over the past 30 years, most of her technical skills have been learned on the job with the acquisition of new equipment and learning to operate it, new software and under impending deadlines for projects. In addition, campus graphics support has grown from the production of flyers and posters to cover much more - including production of graphics for websites and all supporting print materials for events. For the recent CR Autumn Vintage Gala, Lozier-Hannon prepared 25 different items for production.

For her, the mastering of ever-evolving technical skills is very important but it is equally, and maybe more, important to use her art skills and understanding of composition, layout and design.

"From my own experience, the biggest advantage was art instruction in lettering and design," Lozier-Hannon said. "Looking at a letter as a visual form and it placement in (and displacement of) space. That, and getting to know your equipment and what it can and can't do for you."

Lozier-Hannon's designs have won numerous awards including National Paragon and Regional Medallion awards from the National Council for Marketing & Public Relations and awards from the Community College Public Relations Organization .
