TAKING
CARE OF HISTORY
A
Hands-On Preservation Training Workshop
We invite
you to attend Taking Care of History,a two-day, hands-on training
workshop where participants will learn how to care for and maintain
historic buildings and cultural landscapes.
This program
is designed to address the needs of tradespeople working on
an historic site, managers of historic buildings, and educators
in the field of Historic Preservation and Restoration Technology.
Four great
reasons to attend...
Taking
Care of History will utilize a comprehensive and innovative
training approach.
The workshop
will offer attendees an unequalled opportunity to both learn
and practice historic preservation techniques.
The first
day will begin with two concurrent conference-style sessions.
One session will address concerns specific to historic property
owners, managers of historic sites, and trades professionals.
The other session will be aimed towards assisting educators
in developing historic preservation programs and
curricula.
The afternoon
of the first day will be focused on building vocabulary regarding
issues unique to historic properties. Workshop attendees will
go into the field and learn how to read historic buildings and
identify key indicators of buildings as historic resources.
Participants
will spend day two of the workshop getting their hands dirty.
The day will be entirely devoted to learning and practicing
restoration and preservation techniques in historic Presidio
buildings. Topics include masonry, historic materials, cultural
landscaping, historic research, windows, doors, water infiltration,
and plaster repairs and solutions.
The
Presidio of San Francisco, a working historic national landmark,
is a unique venue for a hands-on training workshop.
The Presidio
is a living laboratory for historic preservation with almost
450 historic registered residential and non-residential structures
located on its 1,491 acres. Workshop participants will learn
from studying the Presidio’s unparalleled historic infrastructure.
Taking
Care of History will facilitate an interface between educators,
trades professionals and caretakers in the field of historic
preservation.
This workshop
will afford educators, trades professionals, and caretakers
the opportunity to exchange ideas and build relationships.
Initiating
dialogue between the diverse interests in the Historic Preservation
and Restoration Technology field will help communities develop
a highly trained workforce infrastructure for the care and maintenance
of historic buildings. Educators will be able to structure their
curriculum to address the specific needs of caretakers and trades
professionals. In addition, caretakers and trades professionals
will have access to a highly trained hiring pooi.
College
of the Redwoods, the only community college west of the Mississippi
to offer an AS degree in Historic Preservation, in partnership
with the Presidio Trust will bring innovative ideas and creative
solutions to help preservation professionals and educators achieve
their historic preservation goals.
