Text Box: Eureka Campus

Poets & Writers
Faculty Contact: David Holper at 476-4370 or david-holper@redwoods.edu
Each semester, the Eureka campus presents a showcase of original writing by students, faculty, staff, and community members. This district-wide celebration of fine prose and poetry is held in Humanities 110 on the main campus. The spring 2014 submissions are currently open and will extend until noon, March 26, 2014.  The reading of the accepted work will be presented on Friday, April 25, 2014 at 7:00 pm in Humanities 110.

Among those whose work is accepted, the first place poem and the first place story will receive prizes of $25 gift certificates (the poetry prize is generously sponsored by Northtown Books of Arcata; the prose prize is sponsored by Booklegger Books of Eureka).

In addition, this year we’re offering a new prize, the Hobson Award, which is a $100 award given to the best entry in any genre that builds bridges between species, religions, cultures, ages, or genders, as determined by the judges.  These prizes are for both campus and community members, though not for faculty or staff of College of the Redwoods.

You may submit up to four pieces (poetry, prose, or a combination of the two).  No more than two prose pieces.  Also, if you’re submitting prose, the page limit is four pages double-spaced (12 pt. type).  Poems, however, may be single spaced if they’re under two pages.  We only accept electronic submissions.

To submit your fiction or prose to Poets & Writers, please save the work .doc or docx (Microsoft Word document) and attach it to your email.  Make sure that the first page of your document contains your name, address, daytime telephone, City/State/Zip, and title(s) of the piece(s) you're submitting.   Also indicate whether you're a student, faculty staff member, or community member.  Send the email to submission to
david-holper@redwoods.edu.
