The concepts and vocabulary presented are designed to be useful to travelers and to those interested in an introduction to the German language. | | | | |
| | GERM-1A | Elementary German | | CSU and UC | (4 units lecture) | | | This course represents an introduction to fundamental vocabulary and concepts of structure of the German language. A good understanding of the relationship between English and German will be developed. Basic idiomatic German, plus the ability to communicate in the present and past tenses with a vocabulary of about 1,000 words is emphasized as well as a good basic knowledge of everyday German culture and customs. Communication should be at the 1-2 level (ACTFL proficiency guidelines) by the end of the semester. | | | | |
| | GERM-1B | Elementary German | | CSU and UC | (4 units lecture) | | | This course represents a continuation of fundamental vocabulary as well as the concepts of structure of the German language. It emphasizes a good understanding of spoken German and an ability to read is introduced. The vocabulary consists of about 2,000 words. Skills in forming and recognizing noun and verb compounds add another 1,000 words to the vocabulary. A good knowledge of customs, some proverbs and songs are learned throughout the semester. Communication should be at the 2-3 level of ACTFL recommended proficiency at the end of the semester. | | Prerequisite: GERM-1A | | | |

It includes understanding, reading, and writing German at the intermediate level with emphasis on spoken German and increasing attention to reading and writing. It expands appreciation and knowledge of diverse German cultures. Course emphasis is on culturally authentic reading and writing, along with continued development of listening/speaking competencies. | | Prerequisite: GERM-2A | | | |
