Course Descriptions for Journalism

JOURN-1 Beginning Reporting
CSU(3 units lecture)
This course will introduce students to the role of media in society, enable them to recognize news, learn basic news writing and feature writing styles, and identify and discuss ethical considerations that go into news gathering and reporting. Students also will evaluate news sources, teach and practice news gathering methods, interviewing techniques, library and records research, statistics and demographics in news, and ethics of relationships with news sources.

JOURN-2 Newspaper Practice
CSU(4 units lecture/lab)Repeatable to a maximum of four enrollments
This course, under faculty supervision, produces the student newspaper.

JOURN-3 Newspaper Practice
CSU(0.5 units lab)Repeatable to a maximum of four enrollments
Participation in the production of the student newspaper.

JOURN-4 Writing for Publication
CSU(3 units lecture/lab)
This course provides for the development of marketable writing through identification and analysis of market demands. Use of writer’s guidelines from various publications, the creation of initial contact inquiries to publishers, development of photographic and other illustrations to accompany stories, research, interview techniques, the creative process to develop story ideas, copyright law, critical thinking, and writing modes and styles are emphasized. The creation of on-campus publications (brochures, broadsides, publicity stories, etc.) provides opportunities to be published.
Corequisite: ENGL-1A or ENGL-150

JOURN-5 Introduction to Mass Communications
CSU and UC(3 units lecture)
An introduction to the history, purpose and methods of print and electronic media. Issues involving social, political and technological impacts on mass communication will be studied through exploration of newspapers, magazines, film, television, computers and emerging technologies.
