SOC-1 Introduction to Sociology
CSU and UC(3 units lecture)
An introduction to the discipline of sociology including the basic concepts, principles, and research techniques of sociology. It emphasizes the study of the structures of patterned social interaction including the analysis and explanation of society, human culture, social groups, social institutions, social structure, social stratification, social deviation, and social change.

SOC-10 Marriage and the Family
CSU(3 units lecture)
This course is an examination of marriage and family with an emphasis on current changes in sex roles, values, and expectations of marriage in contemporary America. The course will include an examination of mate selection, sexual expression, parenting, conflict resolution, divorce, remarriage, and different family forms.

SOC-2 Social Problems
CSU and UC(3 units lecture)
This course includes the identification and analysis of social problems from a sociological perspective and the introduction and application of the sociological concepts to the analysis of social problems. Major sociological theoretical perspectives regarding social problems and differing problem solving approaches will be examined.

SOC-3 Human Sexuality
CSU and UC(3 units lecture)
This course provides a comprehensive introduction to the biological, psychosocial, behavioral, and cultural aspects of sexuality. The approach is both academic and self-help problem solving.

SOC-33 Death: The Inevitable Crisis
CSU(3 units lecture)
This course provides for a discussion of the cultural, social, and emotional values and behaviors surrounding death. The primary areas that will be explored include the definition of death, euthanasia, suicide, the process of dying, children and death, bereavement, and the funeral industry.

SOC-34 Introduction to Social Work
CSU(3 units lecture)
An introduction to the central ideas, values and methods of social work studied from the perspective of historical background and contemporary fields of service. The general method of social work will be introduced. Human diversity is emphasized.

SOC-38 Field Experience
CSU(3 units lecture/lab)
An integration of social service theory with supervised field work experience emphasizing developing skills, understanding agency organization, and building a knowledge base regarding social needs and problems. The student may volunteer or seek paid employment in a community or campus social service agency.
Note: Field trips are required. The College does not provide transportation.

SOC-5 Introduction to Race and Ethnic Relations
CSU and UC(3 units lecture)
This course will examine the nature of racial and ethnic relations in American society especially as these relationships interface with the dominant culture. A comparative sociological and historical approach will be used to analyze the experiences of Asians, American Indians, Blacks, and Chicanos from colonial times to the present.

SOC-6 Women in Contemporary Society
CSU and UC(3 units lecture)
This course is an introduction to the study of roles, functions, and consciousness of women in the U.S. and other countries from a sociological perspective. It will concentrate on analyzing the relationships of women to fundamental economic and social institutions, gender-related problems such as basic interactions between males and females with regard to the above subject, and the effect of mass media on women of different classes, ages, and ethnic groups.
