Can I renew Library books and other materials?
Yes, if the item is not overdue, and you are not over the fines limit. Items can only be renewed once. If you can't make it into the Library before your books are due, call the Library Eureka Campus circulation desk at 476-4260, the Del Norte Campus at 476-2330, or the Mendocino Campus at 962-2609 to renew your books over the telephone. Please don't leave a message on the Library voicemail messaging system requesting a renewal of items. You must speak directly with a Library staff person who will renew the books for you while you are on the line. After one renewal, you must return the item(s) to avoid incurring overdue fines. Circulating materials include books, oversize books, back issues of periodicals, pamphlets, videos on VHS or DVD, and audio books on tape or DVD. Reference books, the most current issue of any periodical, and any periodical marked "Library Use Only" may not be borrowed.

What happens if I keep Library books and other materials past their due date?
a) Fines for overdue Library books and other materials are $0.60 (sixty cents) per hour for reserve items, and 10 cents per item per day for all other items, including general collection books, audiocassettes and any other items. Del Norte and Mendocino campus libraries do not charge these fines.
b) You will not be allowed to check out any new Library books and other materials or to renew any currently checked out Library books and other materials if your outstanding fees are one dollar ($1.00) or more, or if you have three (3) or more books overdue.
c) After ninety days (90 days) overdue, books are considered lost and you will automatically be charged forty dollars ($40.00) lost book fee, which includes a ten dollar ($10.00) technical processing fee. All campus libraries charge lost book fines. For either condition b) or c) above, you will not be allowed to register for classes until books are returned and all fines are paid. All campus libraries follow this policy.
d) Official transcripts and diplomas are not issued until all fines are paid in full. Outstanding fines will affect any California state income tax refund.

What are the charges if I damage or lose Library books?
If you damage a Library book, please bring it back so that Library staff can assess the damage. It's possible that the book can be repaired, in which case you will not be charged for the loss of the book. You may be charged a lesser fee to cover the costs of repair, plus a ten dollars ($10.00) processing fee.
If you lose a Library book, or damage it beyond reasonable repair, you will be charged for the replacement cost of the book, which includes a ten dollar ($10.00) technical processing fee. Replacement costs range from $10.00 to as much as $150.00 per book. If the replacement cost varies or is not known, as in the case with out of print books, a flat forty dollars ($40.00) lost book fee, plus a ten dollars ($10.00) technical processing fee will be charged. All campus libraries charge lost book fines. You will not be allowed to register for classes until this fine is paid.
Official transcripts and diplomas are not issued until all fines are paid in full. Outstanding fines will affect any California state income tax refund.

Can I borrow Library books and other materials from other libraries?
CR students, faculty, and staff may request books held at other CR campus libraries, or within the libraries in the North State Cooperative Library System. Books held at libraries outside the NSCLS usually can not be provided. Delivery of items may take from one to three weeks. Inquire about this service, or pick up a request form, at the Circulation Desk. If you need the items for an assignment that has a short deadline, ask the Librarian to help you find more readily available resources.
The CR Libraries do not offer interlibrary loan service for periodical articles from magazines, journals, or newspapers. You can check other local library holdings to see if they have the journal you want, and go to the owning library and photocopy the article yourself from their collection. Ask the Librarian at Eureka Campus, or the Library technicians at the Mendocino and Del Norte Campuses, to help you find locally available resources that will meet your research needs.
