Welcome to Access Careers in Teaching- AmeriCorps
An Academic Program Combining Higher Education and National Service

 

The courses at College of the Redwoods are designed to introduce students to a career in education and provide students with early field experiences so that they can make informed decisions regarding entering the field of education.

ACT AmeriCorps Reading Tutors are required to take EDUC2 and EDUC2L
ACT AmeriCorps Math Tutors are required to take EDUC3 and EDUC 3L

EDUC 1 Introduction to Education (2 cr)
An introduction to teaching as a career, including the steps involved in becoming a teacher, as well as the types of skills and knowledge required to be a teacher. Provides an overview of social and historical understanding of K-12 schooling in America through the lens of contemporary controversies in the field. 

EDUC 1L Introduction to Education Lab (1.5 cr)
Provides early fieldwork experience in schools. Observe a minimum of 54 hours in a classroom and keep log. Lecture element provides opportunity for structured reflection of observation experience.

EDUC 2 Reading Tutoring Techniques (2 cr)
A study designed to prepare college students for tutoring reading in elementary schools. A variety of tutoring skills are explored including phonemic awareness, letter names and shapes, decoding, vocabulary, comprehension and higher level thinking. Students will learn how to implement appropriate tutoring techniques for small groups and individual children. (Optional lab class enables students to implement tutoring techniques in an elementary classroom.)

EDUC 2L Reading Tutoring Techniques Lab (1-2 cr)
Tutoring reading with children from Kindergarten through sixth grade, in an approved elementary school site to allow students to implement skills learned in EDUC 2, Reading Tutoring Techniques. (Repeatable to a maximum of 4 enrollments/8 units. Students may be responsible for the cost of background clearances required by elementary school sites.) 

EDUC 3 Math Tutoring Techniques (2 cr)
A study designed to prepare college students for tutoring math in elementary schools. A variety of tutoring skills are explored. Students will learn how to implement appropriate tutoring techniques for small groups and individual children.

EDUC 3L Math Tutoring Techniques Lab (1-2 cr)
Tutoring math with children from Kindergarten through sixth grade, in an approved elementary school site to allow students to implement skills learned in EDUC 3, Math Tutoring Techniques. (Repeatable to a maximum of 4 enrollments/8 units. Students may be responsible for the cost of background clearances required by elementary school sites.)

EDUC 4 Technology Skills for Educators (3 cr)
Provides a broad overview of computing skills and terminology in preparation for a career in education. Information and hands-on explorations allow students to develop basic skills for using computers, their peripherals, media equipment, and many common computer applications. Assignments are tailored to meet specific technology competencies mandated by the Commission on Teacher Credentialing.

EDUC 6 Introduction to Children’s Literature (3 cr)
Provides an overview of children’s literature including its history, formats and various genre, and selected authors and illustrators. The course covers evaluation and selection of appropriate literature for children, including poetry, fiction and nonfiction. Students learn about the role of literature in the total development of children (preschool to high school) and the uses of literature in the classroom. 

EDUC 7 Positive Guidance in the Classroom (3 cr)
Provides principles of positive guidance based on contemporary research and child development. The course focuses on application of the principles of effective communication, understanding child development and behavior, appropriate limits and rules, structuring problem solving, and consequences. 
 
EDUC 10 Teaching Secondary Math and Science (2 cr)
An exploration of secondary math and science teaching as a career including an overview of knowledge and skills required to teach math and science at the high school level. Students complete observation and participation in a high school math and science classroom.
