SPIRIT Program

Support Parents In Reading Involvement
What Is SPIRIT? SPIRIT'S Goals Why SPIRIT AmeriCorps at CR Community Partners

What Is SPIRIT? The SPIRIT Program was implemented in November 2001 in collaboration with Access Careers in Teaching AmeriCorps, College of The Redwoods, and AmeriCorps*VISTA. SPIRIT (Support Parents In Reading Involvement) aims to get parents more involved in their children's educational lives by providing tutors in the home to guide and assist them in helping their children to succeed in life.

SPIRIT is a local program serving local needs. With the vision of helping others by developing tools to help themselves, SPIRIT views education as an important tool and the key to future success in life. Our program is designed to advance the opportunities of Humboldt County residents.

SPIRIT'S Goals

The AmeriCorps SPIRIT Program is designed to address the issue of poor reading skills in K-6 children in Federal Title 1 schools by focusing on the problem of low parental involvement in reading to their children and other literacy efforts.

The Program Seeks To:

  • Increase the frequency and quality of parent's participation in reading with their K-6 child.
  • Recruit and train volunteers to instruct parents in reading and other literacy efforts with their child.
  • Increase community involvement in literacy programs.
  • Help ensure that every child can read well and independently by the end of the third grade.

Why SPIRIT? Parents are their children's first and primary teachers who play an important role in their learning. All children should have the opportunity to read and write. Literacy is an essential life skill that provides children with the opportunity to advance in life. SPIRIT aims to get parents involved in their children's success by providing them assistance in preparing their children for the future. Thirty years of research has shown that parental involvement makes a significant difference in children's reading success.

Your Community, Your Chance to Make it Better

Reading is a necessary and important skill for children and the inability to read can have profound educational and life consequences. Reading is essential to success in school, to successful participation in society and to finding sustainable work. Low literacy levels are closely associated with poverty, unemployment, and civic non-participation.

AmeriCorps at CR College of the Redwoods affirms its responsibility to address the diverse civic needs of the many communities they serve and to provide leadership in the civic, cultural, and economic development of the North Coast region.

AmeriCorps*VISTA Members will complement and expand College of the Redwood's capacity to deliver literacy services to children. The goal is for College of the Redwoods to establish a program to address low literacy rates in K-6 children and train parents of these students in reading and other literacy efforts. The program provides an opportunity for the college campus to partner with school districts, literacy programs, and foster care agencies and to provide other out reach and support services to the community.
