CR Southern Humboldt Instructional Site
CR Southern Humboldt Instructional Site - Imagine the Possibilities!
GOAL: College of the Redwoods will acquire the Southern Humboldt Unified School District’s 1939 Garberville School and property (about 3 acres), which will become the permanent CR Southern Humboldt Instructional Site. Assuming no unforeseen challenges or delays, CR will remodel the building and offer classes to students and community members for Fall Semester 2010.
CR and SHUSD—Sharing Investment in Our Future: The Southern Humboldt Unified School District will invest in the future of education in Southern Humboldt by approving CR’s offer of $100,000 for the property. CR will invest in the future of Southern Humboldt by spending
over $1 million dollars through the first year of classes to renew this educational resource.
College of the Redwoods wants to create an instructional site at the historic Garberville School. CR’s Mission Statement includes two overarching commitments to education and economic development that affect Southern Humboldt:
- “Maximizing the success of each student”
- “Enriching the economic vitality of the community”
CR is committed to bringing educational services to all underserved areas of its community college district, including Southern Humboldt.
The CR Proposal and Offer to the Southern Humboldt Unified School District
A preliminary proposal was sketched in an email from CR President, Dr. Jeff Marsee, to the Southern Humboldt Unified School District (SHUSD) on May 18, offering $100,000 for the building and grounds. This preliminary proposal was presented at the May 21 SHUSD special board meeting. On June 4, Dr. Marsee, along with CR vice presidents, deans, and directors, was given a tour of the building by Superintendent Anderson. During the week of June 8, the college submitted a formal offer to the SHUSD that formalized the preliminary offer of $100,000.
CR and SHUSD—Sharing a Community Mission of Educational Excellence
The mission of the Southern Humboldt Unified School District will be significantly furthered and enhanced for their students who have access to a CR Southern Humboldt Instructional Site.
- High school students will have enhanced educational opportunities. Students can concurrently enroll in CR courses and complete some of their course requirements before they enter college or career training programs—a significant financial saving to students and their families.
- College-bound students and residents will receive localized student services for financial aid, academic and career counseling, tutoring, as well as math and English assessment testing for placement in appropriate college courses.
- All students and residents will have access to CR’s electronic library services.
- Local high school graduates and adults can stay in the community to start, continue, and complete their general education requirements at an affordable price before transferring to a four-year college.
- Fees at College of the Redwoods are only $26 per unit. CSU fees are at least seven times higher. A student going to College of the Redwoods for a two-year degree could save over $7,500.
- CR has many transfer agreements in place for guaranteed transfer to a four-year college after general education requirements are completed.
CR Southern Humboldt—Economic Partnerships and Job Training
- Work-readiness training and career re-training can be offered in the Southern Humboldt area through CR’s partnerships with Humboldt County programs and grant resources. Adults in Southern Humboldt can access classes while continuing to work.
- CR Southern Humboldt will create opportunities to partner with Southern Humboldt Community Hospital District and Redwoods Rural Health Center.
- CR Southern Humboldt will enhance local economic development by assisting new and established businesses in training employees.
- CR Southern Humboldt will provide an entry-point to CR’s agriculture and forestry program, which features the sustainable organic farm at Shively.
- A new CR Southern Humboldt Instructional Site will enhance local retail businesses such as restaurants, grocery stores, and coffee shops by bringing more foot traffic.
- Video conferencing for local business needs will be available.
CR Southern Humboldt—Community Benefits
- CR will maintain a well-lit building, grounds, and parking lot—a place of learning and activities with a positive image. The CR Southern Humboldt Instructional Site will help stabilize and make the neighborhood safe as well as enhance surrounding property values.
- The CR Southern Humboldt auditorium can be used at appropriate times as a community “town hall” and meeting place, a theater, or a lecture hall.
- Classrooms, when not in use, will be available for community activities. Also, the playing field at the back of the property will remain open space for recreational activities, both for classes and the community.
- A new computer lab will be open for public use outside of class time.
- In addition to credit classes, CR Southern Humboldt can provide an array of personal-enrichment community education classes for lifelong learners.
CR’s Vision for Revitalizing the Garberville School as a 21st Century Learning Center
- In remodeling the building, CR will dedicate resources for distance education opportunities:
- Online classes
- Hybrid classes (part online and part in-class instruction)
- Instructional television technology
- Video conferencing for local business needs
- CR will create a new computer resource lab for access to technology and training.
- CR will create the necessary and needed facilities to serve those who are disabled as well as make our senior citizens welcome.
- CR will construct a new parking lot behind the school so as not to adversely impact the neighborhood with vehicles. The parking lot will allow safe and easy access to classes.
