College of the Redwoods took a severe hit to its hopes of claiming a Golden Valley Conference crown Tuesday with a 4-0 loss to Butte at Community Stadium.
With just three games remaining in the regular season, the loss put a daunting amount of space between the third-place Corsairs (2-5-0 in GVC, 2-10-2 overall) and the second-place Roadrunners (4-1-2, 8-6-2).
Redwoods was coming off its best four-game stretch of the season — winning two of four matches — but two penalty kicks that did not go the Corsairs’ way gave them their first back-to-back losses since late September.
“The score definitely doesn’t indicate how well we played tonight,” CR head coach Lyle Wilks said.
Butte got out to a quick start and piled on goals late in the game.
Roadrunner freshman Shelby Elder scored in the 12th minute and watched her team successfully fend off CR’s attack, which was most dangerous midway through the first half.
The Corsairs took four corner kicks in a six-minute span and nearly converted twice. Midfielder Breon Hole rolled a shot wide right just minutes before forward Alicia Oliphant blasted a shot over the middle of the goal.
“The only thing that prevented us from scoring was our lack of finishing,” Wilks said.
Redwoods went into the half down just one goal and Wilks, looking for more firepower offensively, moved speedy defender Stephanie DeMarzi to forward. The move was inches from paying off.
Butte scored in the 55th minute and just two minutes later DeMarzi was pushed over when she had possession in the penalty box, which set up a penalty kick. CR’s leading goal scorer Amanda Hassler kicked the ball wide left of the goal post and watched Butte convert on a controversial PK less than 20 minutes later.
Butte forward Nakita Klempa went to the ground in the 73rd minute and referees ruled she was pushed over inside the penalty box. Lisa Hall took the PK shot, which was blocked by CR goalie Amy Moody, but Hall netted the rebound.
“I don’t know what he called on that penalty kick,” Wilks said about the referees. “We’ve been playing well at home; we just didn’t finish.”
Redwoods will be on the road Friday for a game with Feather River, which CR beat 2-1 at home two weeks ago.
“We’ve just got to keep our heads up,” Wilks said.
