Corsairs Committed to Communicating

There was nothing perfect about the 10 the College of the Redwoods softball team put up in a pair of big losses on the road last Saturday.

The Corsairs (3-3) had 10 hits over the weekend but committed the same number of errors in their 17-9 loss to Diablo Valley and 20-3 defeat at the hands of San Jose City.

For CR head coach Maggie White and her roster, which returned just two players from last year’s team, communication could have solved a lot of their problems.

“They get a little tentative communicating. There were some balls that dropped between the infield and outfield,” White said. “If it happens once, okay, but it shouldn’t happen again. If it happens again it’s pretty frustrating.”

Any chance the team had to redeem itself in a doubleheader Sunday at Ohlone was washed away as the games were canceled due to rain. But once CR arrived back in Eureka, the wet weather worked to its advantage.

The Corsairs were forced to practice in the fieldhouse Tuesday, where they will likely stay for the rest of the week until they leave on Saturday for this weekend’s North State Shootout Tournament in Redding. Once inside where it’s quiet, communicating became a lot easier.

“It’s easy to do indoors communication stuff,” White said.

White dedicated much of Tuesday’s practice to defense — fielding ground balls, and of course, catching pop flies that fall in the shallow parts of the outfield.

White also brought aboard Jayson Vossler to serve as an assistant coach who will specialize with the infield and batting. Vossler, who worked in the same capacity with Siskiyous last year, also coached alongside CR men’s basketball head coach Skip Gleason in the Corsairs’ playoff run this season.

For White, first baseman Haily Miranda and outfielder Rachel Damme, a trip back to Redding and the all-turf, Big League Dreams Park means a trip back to the site of the 2006 State Tournament.

After sweeping their regional tournament last year, the Corsairs advanced and claimed the Golden Valley Conference’s first-ever victory at the State Tournament level.

“I love the facility. It’s my personal favorite place to play,” White said of Big League Dreams Park, which has three fields that are replicas of Major League stadiums. “Some players don’t like it. Some players love it.”

Besides playing there on road games with Shasta, Redwoods on occassion makes another trip or two to the stadium each season to play other GVC schools whose fields are rained out. Last year, CR destroyed Vossler’s Eagles 12-2 in one such game, and historically the Corsairs have had success in Redding.

“All those games were on Wrigley Field,” White said. “This weekend we’re going to be playing at Yankee Stadium.”
