The College of the Redwoods softball team nearly pulled one out in the final game of the weekend tournament at the North State Shootout in Redding, but a late rally by Delta foiled the Corsairs’ fortunes.

Redwoods committed four errors and lost to Modesto 7-3 in the opening game and had Delta in a 0-0 tie until the top of the sixth. An infield error by CR sparked a two-run sixth for Delta, who followed with a three-run seventh inning and went on to shut out the Corsairs for the first time this season 5-0.

“We were in Redding for 25 hours and played five games,” CR head coach Maggie White said. “We got up real early Saturday morning and played three games, then played at 9 a.m. on Sunday. It was just a ‘boom, boom, boom,’ type of weekend.”

Redwoods won one of its five games in Redding during the tournament and came out with a 4-7 overall record. Reserve pitcher and starting left fielder Cari Killingsworth broke her nose on a botched bunt in the tournament opener and White hopes she will be back within a week or two.

On Sunday, Shanna McCracken had seven strikeouts in the circle and pitched all five of CR’s games over the weekend. Haily Miranda had two fly balls robbed at the fence and went 2-for-5 with two RBIs and a double on the final day.

Redwoods will travel to Fremont to play in the Ohlone tournament next weekend.
