Twenty-five years of excellent craftsmanship will be celebrated by the College of the Redwoods Fine Woodworking Program at the Highlight Galley.
The Mendocino gallery is hosting a two-month 25th CR Anniversary Fine Woodworking Show. An opening reception, open to the public, will take place on Saturday, Sept. 8 from 5 to 8 p.m. Highlight Gallery is located at 45052 Main Street in Mendocino.
The show will be on display until November 8. The galley is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily.
“More than 70 of our graduates representing the entire span of this program's existence are coming from as far away as New Zealand and Sweden to join old friends and meet new ones,” said David Welter, CR Fine Woodworking instructor.
Since its founding in 1981 by the now-retired James Krenov, the Fine Woodworking Program has drawn students from all of the United States and the world. The nine-month program, which has room for 23 new students each year, annually has a waiting list to get in to it.
Krenov’s first book, “A Cabinetmaker’s Notebook,” published in 1976 while he was working in Stockholm, Sweden, made him famous around the globe. Many fine wood craftsmen and women point to the book as changing the direction of their lives.
The teaching methods he taught and has passed on to his successors at CR’s program, emphasize the pursuit of excellent workmanship using hand tools.
Krenov has said that he had opportunities to teach at several private universities but he decided to settle in Fort Bragg at CR because he wanted the program to be accessible to a variety of students.
