College of the Redwoods decided recently to cancel its annual Science Night, which was schedule for late October.

“CR faculty and staff are hard at work addressing the issues identified by the Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges as areas of concern,” said

Tony Sartori, Division Chair for CR’s Math, Science and Engineering Department. “However, CR will bring back Science Night bigger and better than ever in October 2008.”
Sartori said CR’s website, found at www.redwoods.edu, will have updates next fall about Science Night.

CR’s Science Night has been a part of the college for 22 years. The event features CR instructors and some local elementary and high school teachers presenting a wide array of fun science, math, agriculture and health-related demonstrations and hands-on activities.

Some community-oriented activities CR is continuing this fall include:

CR instructors are integrally involved in KEET-TV’s “HomeWork Hotline,” a twice-weekly live, call-in show that answers students' math and science questions.

CR’s Organic Sustainable Agriculture Farm in Shively offers a farmer’s market selling its produce every Wednesday from 12:30 to 4 p.m. in front of the bookstore on the main Eureka campus.

Events surrounding the CR/Humboldt State Book of the Year, “The Kite Runner.” These include free presentations of a collection of “Kite Runner” and Afghan-themed videos in the Forum Theater on the main Eureka campus beginning at 7 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 12 and 19.
