Lyndon Rowells is at it again, and this time he brought someone with him.
Rowells, who set single-season and single-game rushing records for the College of the Redwoods football team this year as a freshman, over the weekend was voted as the top running back on the California Community College Football Coaches Association Region 1 All-State team.
And unlike last month when he was voted an honorable mention to the JC Gridwire All-America team, a teammate is joining him.
Fortuna High grad and CR freshman left tackle Justin Priomofiore made the first team with Rowells, and considering the competition, for both players to be recognized is no small feat.
Region 1 includes the Bay Valley Conference (where CR currently plays), Mid-Empire Conference and NorCal Conference, the last of which has a combined record of 44-21 and includes City College of San Francisco, which won the state championship game last week.
California, which holds 72 junior college football teams, is broken up into four regions.
To choose the players, coaches attended a selection meeting last weekend and gave 30-second speeches in front of other coaches to voice the case of their players. Rowells, the No. 2 rusher in the state (138 yards per game) and No. 2 in all-purpose yards (189 ypg), was a no-brainer.
So was Primofiore.
”Left tackle is the premier spot on the line,” CR head coach Dave Banducci said. “He was the lead guy on our line. When we ran, we ran to the left side towards him, (Van) Dunn and (Richard) Semo.”
Rowells ran for 311 yards against De Anza in October and he had a total of 1,384 yards and 12 touchdowns rushing. As a team, Redwoods gained 2,461 yards and 33 touchdowns this year. It was 21 yards away from being the top rushing team in the state and settled for No. 3.
CR free safety Kolin Hancock made the honorable mention team for the second straight season, though last year he made it as a receiver.
Zach Nichols made the honorable mention team as a linebacker and Kyle Dillard made it as a defensive lineman.
