It will be a stalled celebration for the College of the Redwoods men's basketball team if it defeats Feather River today in the final regular season game of the year.

If they do win, the Corsairs will have to wait until after 9 p.m. tonight to find out if they will ever wear the cardinal red and gold again this year.

Redwoods, which dropped two games last week and fell into a three-way tie for second place in the Golden Valley Conference over the weekend must wait for the verdict of the Butte-Lassen game before it can make any plans to play beyond today.

Butte, riding a four-game winning streak that includes an 88-83 victory of CR last week, jumped into second place along with the Corsairs (5-4 in the GVC, 16-12 overall) and Feather River after defeating Shasta on Wednesday. The Roadrunners take on first-place Lassen today at 7:30 p.m. in a game that could have everything to do with the Corsairs' playing lives over the next week, at least.

Butte (5-4, 17-8) split with CR in the regular season, but by virtue of having a better overall record, could nab what is likely to be the second and final playoff bid from the GVC. Lassen, which has the conference title wrapped up, gets the guaranteed slot as league champ.

”We need to win today to have a shot at the playoffs,” CR head coach Jayson Vossler said. “If we win, that means we have a shot at making one of the last seeds in the playoffs. The team knows that and they're going to play

hard to try and come out with a win.”

And perhaps no one would like to see that victory more than CR's lone sophomores, Darren Nye and Tom Higgins.

The pair of guards played a big role in CR's winning its first GVC title outright since 1995 last year and they only stepped things up this season.

Nye led the team in points per game (16.6), while Higgins was close behind at 16.4.

”Basically, they came in as part of a changing program and helped it turn into a competitive one throughout the conference and even the state,” Vossler said. “We've had winning records each of the last two years and won the GVC last year, all with them as our starting backcourt.”

Delegates from each conference will attend a meeting on Monday to determine the final seeds for the playoffs.

There is Always Next Year: CR Men Narrowly Miss Playoffs
All he could do was sit and wait over the weekend, hoping for news that his team would embark on the road to postseason glory. Jayson Vossler knew he and his team did all they could to earn the right to lengthen their season with a playoff berth. Patiently he waited, and on Monday, he didn't get the news he wanted to hear.
CR Men Make Case to Get In Playoffs, Knock Off Feather River
The Redwoods men's basketball team grinded out a tough 71-59 win over Feather River on Saturday, which may have been all the Corsairs needed to extend their season.
