Salmon fishing may be closed here on the North Coast and around California this year, but nobody told the Shasta baseball team. College of the Redwoods starting pitcher Matt Salmon had the Knights fishing for hits all game long.
Salmon threw a nine-inning complete-game in the opener of the Corsairs’ final Golden Valley Conference doubleheader at Eureka on Thursday, throwing just 93 pitches (72 for strikes), and CR won its first GVC game of the year 5-1.
“Matt gave an incredible performance today,” said CR head coach Bob Brown, who announced recently he will be stepping down as coach for one season to spend time with his wife and newborn baby. “He used our field to his advantage by throwing strikes and getting a lot of fly balls, and we made the plays. It was our best defensive game of the year.”
CR fell in the nightcap 11-2, dropping its final GVC record to 1-24 (4-35 overall), but more importantly, the Corsairs got the monkey off their back, and head into the offseason on somewhat of a positive note.
Salmon also went 3-for-4 at the plate in the opener, and on the mound, had six strikeouts and no walks, allowing just six hits. He faced just 34 batters in the game.
The Corsairs out-hit the Knights 11-6 and made just one defensive error in the opener, but in the nightcap, CR reverted back to its former self.
The Corsairs made six errors in the second game, and scored their only runs in the seventh inning on a two-RBI single from Tim Burwell.
Burwell went 3-for-5 in the doubleheader with three RBIs.
“The story of the season was the fact we just didn’t have enough guys make the commitment,” Brown said. “But I’m very proud of the guys that stuck it out. We had a lot of guys get the opportunity to play, so now we need to take that experience and build on it for next season.”
CR announced that assistant coach Todd Zeigler will head the program next season.
Brown has been the head coach at CR for the past 12 years, and has been coaching for the past 18 years.
He says he’s looking forward to the time away and having a chance to reorganize the program’s priorities.
“I think it will be good to step away and sort of re-evaluate what I can do better and how to make the program competitive,” he said.
After the split, Shasta finished up conference play 13-12 (18-22 overall).
