The first Licensed Vocational Nursing program class graduated in 1958 as part of the Eureka City Schools Adult School.
On Friday, Aug. 15 the College of the Redwoods LVN class will graduate, making it the 50th.
The Pinning Ceremony will take place at 11 a.m. in the CR Gymnasium. Thirty-one LVNs will graduate, the largest CR class ever, according to LVN Nursing Professor Roberta Farrar. The guest speaker will be Jessie Laurendeau, a registered nurse and founding member of the Vocational Nursing Committee of 1957.
Farrar said that she is asking previous LVN students and instructors to bring any memorabilia, such as photos, from their school or career experience to the pinning ceremony. The items will be copied and archived.
College of the Redwoods took over as the host school for the LVN program in 1973.
The program takes one calendar year to finish, fall and spring semesters and summer school. If a successful LVN graduate passes a licensing board test, then he or she is qualified to work in a variety of settings, such as skilled nursing and long-term facilities, county jails, state prisons, urgent care centers, medical clinics and state mental health units.
Most LVNs start working on the North coast for an annual salary of around $31,.000 to $35,000.
If an LVN decides to continue on to become a RN, they come in as a second-year RN student. The CR RN program takes two-years after all of the pre-requisites are completed.
