One serve at a time, one pass at a time, the College of the Redwoods women’s volleyball team has continued to grow under third-year head coach Marla Gleave, and 2008 is no exception.

Since resurrecting the non-existent program in 2006, Gleave and the Corsairs have slowly and surely been laying a foundation for success. And Gleave, despite returning just two players from last year’s team, is thrilled with how things are progressing.

“We’ve got nine freshmen on the roster this year, 11 out on the floor, which is the most we’ve had since I’ve been here,” Gleave said. “I finally have some options.”

The Corsairs, who open the season next Friday at Mendocino, are returning sophomores Melissa Throssel out of Fortuna, and Ines Castro-Moore, a sophomore out of Portugal, who came to Humboldt County to live with family last August.

“I’m definitely looking for my two sophomores to lead the way,” Gleave said. “I’ve been very pleased with their leadership the past week-and-a-half. They’ve been out there, working hard and showing enthusiasm, taking the freshmen under their wings.”

Although CR did not win a Golden Valley Conference game in 2007, finishing 0-10, Gleave and the Corsairs are not discouraged, and are anxious to pick back up where they left off.

“One of the quotes we‘ve been using is, ‘One serve at a time, one pass at a time,’” she said. “We keep things simple and broken down into small goals in order to reach the big picture. We were in a lot of the matches we lost last year, going five games where it could’ve gone either way. We just have to keep it up.”

Local players on the Corsairs’ roster include freshmen Macy Renner and Kristen Johnson, out of Ferndale, Crystal Carpenter (St. Bernard’s) and Angie Brundage (McKinleyville).

The Corsairs open GVC play Oct. 10 at home against Butte, and will definitely have their work cut out for them when take on Siskiyous Oct. 22.

Siskiyous went undefeated in the GVC last year (10-0, 23-4 overall), and is expected to be strong again this year.

“On the basis of returning players, Siskiyous is probably the favorite to win league,” Gleave said. “They had a very strong team last year and a lot of players coming back.”
