EUREKA -- The College of the Redwoods women's basketball program showed plenty of promise under the leadership of first-year head coach Kara Newman in 2005-2006, and now, thanks to her interim tag being removed, the program, and the coach, can continue with what they have started.

When former head coach Marla Gleave opted for a leave of absence in order to devote her full attention to her new job of faculty senate co-president, Newman was named the interim head coach, with the understanding that Gleave would return for the 2006-2007 season.

However, earlier this year, Gleave agreed to assume the position of head volleyball coach, which had been vacant since the program was unable to field a team for the 2005 season. Upon Gleave's reassignment, Athletic Director Joe Hash was pleased to offer Newman the opportunity to continue as CR's head coach.

”She's great, we love having her around,” said Hash. “She did a great job with the team. She also does a great job with recruiting and getting the community involved.”

Newman accepted, and will now turn her focus to improving upon her rookie season by attracting a solid recruiting class to compliment her stellar returnees Shauna Strickland and Kaitlinn Solinsky.

Strickland, who averaged 18.3 points and 4.4 rebounds per game, was recently named Golden Valley Conference Freshman of the Year.

Solinsky, who was just behind her teammate at 17.8 points per game while adding 5.6 rebounds, was named to the honorable mention team.
