College of the Redwoods’ Emily Clark and Kayla Throgmorton each delivered goals in the opening 10 minutes in a Golden Valley Conference soccer game against Shasta on Friday in Eureka, but slowly and surely the Knights climbed their way back, ending the game with a 2-2 draw.
Clark cleaned up a loose ball directly in front of the goal in the fourth minute, giving the Corsairs a 1-0 advantage right away, while Throgmorton followed shortly after with a laser from beyond the goalie box that sailed past Shasta’s leaping keeper.
“We were passing great,” said CR interim co-head coach Sunny Bothwell of the Corsairs’ early attacks. “We really came ready to play. We were focused, we were playing as a team, and we did what we needed to do. But Shasta’s a good team. They hung in there.”
Shasta midfielder Megan Colburn cut the 2-0 deficit in half in the 29th minute, and the score remained 2-1 at the half.
A light sprinkle in the first half turned into a heavy downpour in the second, and neither team could cash in on a goal until the 71st minute, when Shasta midfielder Hannah Brown got a one-on-one with CR goalkeeper Aleks Dellabalma, and sent it to the back of the net for a 2-2 tie.
Despite not getting the win, Bothwell was still pleased with her team’s performance.
“The last couple of games have been losses so we’ll take a tie,” she said. “We may not have got the win, but I’m still happy with how we played. We played hard. I could really see us working together. We came prepared and it showed.”
After the tie, the Corsairs are 0-2-1 in the GVC and 1-6-1 overall.
CR plays next on Thursday in Butte.
