The College of the Redwoods women’s volleyball team is doing its part to raise breast cancer awareness as the Corsairs host Lassen in a Golden Valley Conference match today at 3 p.m.
In recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, CR is asking its fans to wear pink and, if possible, make a contribution to the Humboldt County Breast Health Project.
“My mom’s a breast cancer survivor,” said CR head coach Marla Gleave. “And on my team, my players have two grandmothers and an aunt who have dealt with breast cancer. We decided to do a little spiel to bring awareness, and on our end, with me at least, it’s more of a celebration with my mom being a survivor. I’ve got a positive story when it comes to breast cancer.”
Both CR and Lassen are winless in the GVC with 0-3 records, and will be hungry to get that first conference win.
Despite its record, however, Gleave feels her team has improved on a daily basis, and is hoping her players can get their first GVC win today by working together better than they did in the team’s last home outing, when it was handily swept in three games by Shasta.
“The three teams we’ve lost to in conference are sitting one-two-three in the standings,” Gleave said. “I think the kids realize they’ve been playing against good competition, and they’re still doing good things. And we have to continue to do those good things, even in the face of defeat. We have to keep playing positive and with energy. I’ve found that when we bring energy to the court good things happen.”
The Corsairs next conference game will be Nov. 5 at Shasta, and they return home Nov. 7 to face Feather River.
CR player makes pre-game trip to ER
A College of the Redwoods volleyball player was sent to the Emergency Room Thursday night following a collision during practice.
CR’s Alice Fluher and Kayla Bateson collided during the Corsairs’ final pre-game practice before today’s game against Lassen, bumping heads, and Fluher was sent to the ER to be checked out for a possible concussion.
“Everything checked out fine,” said CR head coach Marla Gleave. “Her eye was pretty swollen, so we’ll probably decide right at game time if she’ll be able to play. We could end up with some last-minute changes in the rotation and the kids are just going to have to adjust.”
