CR presents 15th annual Festival of Hispanic Cultures
College of the Redwoods will celebrate Cinco de Mayo with its 15th Annual Festival of Hispanic Cultures on Thursday, April 30, Monday, May 4 and Tuesday, May 5. All activities will be held in the Lakeview Room.
On Thursday, April 30, from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., guest presenter Dr. Suzanne Pasztor, professor of Latin American History at HSU, will speak on “The Search for Identity in Latin American History”. This presentation will explore the history of the search for identity by highlighting the efforts of several Latin American countries to define the “essence” of their nation.
On Monday, May 4, from 3:30 p.m. to 4:45 p.m., Cynthia Hooper, professor of Art at CR, will present a lecture titled “Dual Citizenship and Border Patrol: Picturing Tijuana’s Contested, Transnational Water”. This lecture is about how Hooper’s recent painting and video projects respond to the problematic relationship between the U.S. and Mexico over the issue of water, economic development, and the environment.
On Tuesday, May 5, the Cinco de Mayo celebration begins from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m., featuring music, dance, students’ essays on the meaning of Cinco de Mayo, songs, poetry, more dance, theater performance and delicious Mexican food.
CR’s Festival of Hispanic Culture is sponsored by the CR Spanish Department, Club de Español, College of the Redwoods Human Resources and Staff Diversity, Dr. Justine Shaw, Chair of CR Arts, Languages and Social Sciences.
