CR gives out over $300,000 in scholarships

College of the Redwoods recently held a scholarship celebration reception, hosted by the CR Foundation League, on the main Eureka campus where more than $71,000 was given out to 130 students to assist them in continuing their education.

District-wide, including the Del Norte and Mendocino education centers, CR has given out over $300,000 in scholarships this school year to over 450 students.

The CR Foundation League, which formed over 20 years ago for the purpose of raising money for scholarships, gave out a total of $15,000 this year. Other major endowed scholarships include: Dr. and Mrs. Ingebritson; Applied Technology/Science; Ernest and Mildred Lanini Memorial; Mona L. Beaver Nursing; Glyndon and Ruth Smith; and Louis and Fern Weichselfelder Nursing.

The Scholarship Office also receives many awards that students have received from scholarships outside of CR. This academic year they have received $181,750 in award money for 236 students (this includes students from all CR campuses).

CR has two scholarship sessions, one in the fall and one in the spring. The Fall 2009 scholarship application is due on September 18. The CR scholarship application, as well as a list of available CR scholarships, can be found on the CR scholarship webpage at www.redwoods.edu/district/scholarships

CR will, once again, be offering the Enrollment Scholarship for the Fall 2009 semester. The only requirements to be eligible for the enrollment scholarship are that one must live within the CR district boundaries, must be a first-time student at CR, be required to fill out financial aid paperwork to determine eligibility and be a full-time student, meaning he or she must take at least 12 units. Enrollment Scholarship also requires that the student be a resident of California. Students who qualify for California resident tuition rates under Assembly Bill (AB) 540 may also qualify for this scholarship.

For information about the CR scholarships, call Susan Wiegman in the CR Scholarship Office, at 476-4191.
