A total of 399 degrees and/or certificates will be awarded Saturday morning, May 16 during College of the Redwoods commencement ceremony.
The graduation event will take place at 11 a.m. in the CR Gymnasium. There will be 134 associate of arts degrees, 149 associate of science degrees and 80 certificates of achievement will be given to the students.
District-wide, including the Del Norte Center in Crescent City, the Mendocino Coast Center in Fort Bragg and the Klamath-Trinity Instructional site in Hoopa, a total of 501 degrees and/or certificates will be awarded: 169 associate of arts degrees, 199 associate of science degrees and 133 certificates of achievement. Each center and the K-T Site have their own commencement event.
For those who cannot attend the commencement ceremony in person, CR will stream the event on its website at www.redwoods.edu and broadcast it live on Access Humboldt Suddenlink cable TV channel 8
No parking permits will be required during commencement.
CR’s will have a special guest speaker, Betty Chinn, deliver an address to the graduates. Chinn is a state-wide honored Eureka resident who has personally been making and delivering meals to the homeless for the last 20 years.
CR President Dr. Jeff Marsee, in his first commencement with CR, will deliver the welcome to the students and pass out diplomas to the graduates along with CR Board of Trustees members George Truett and Tom Ross. Marsee began his tenure as CR president on July 1, 2008.
“Commencement is the culmination of all of our efforts this year,” Marsee said. “Everything we do at CR is aimed at helping our students succeed in school and in their lives. We are honored to celebrate their achievements as a college with their family and guests.”
CR District-wide valedictorian Rachel McCain, who achieved a perfect 4.0 grade point average while attending the CR Del Norte Center in Crescent City, will also address the students with a short speech. CR Professor Allen Keppner, co-president of the Academic Senate will honor the retiring CR faculty members and announce the outstanding associate (part-time) faculty member of the year. CR Professor Tony Sartori, Academic Senate co-president, will announce the outstanding faculty member of the year.
Two CR alumni of the year will also be recognized: Lisa Trepiak, a 1982 graduate of the CR Dental Assisting program who has been a part-time dental assisting instructor for 23 years; and Bill Hiney, a 1976 graduate who has been a part-time CR forestry instructor since 1996 and worked as a professional forester, forestry consultant and timber worker sine 1975.
In addition, on Saturday at 2:30 p.m. the 40th registered nursing pinning ceremony will be held for 60 students in celebration of the completion of their program The event will be held in in the CR gym. CR Nursing & Health Occupations Director Dr. Pat Girczyc will welcome the graduates and their guests.
“These students couldn’t have accomplished this without a great deal of support,” Girczyc said. “Thank you’s go to the community members who shared their hospital experiences with our students and to the registered nurses and health care providers throughout the community for being mentors and role models.”
