The 6th Annual College of the Redwoods Athletics Dinner and Sports Auction will be held on Thursday, August 13th at the Adorni Center. The Dinner and Sports Auction is a benefit for CR student athletes and their sports programs. This year’s event will honor CR’s first basketball coaches Pete Mathiesen and the late Bill ‘Tregs’ Treglown. The event kicks off at 5:00pm with a no-host Social and Silent Auction, Dinner at 6:00pm followed by the honoring of the coaches and the Live Auction at 7:00pm.
Pete Mathiesen became the first basketball coach in college history beginning with the 1965-66 season. He coached the Corsairs through the 1969-70 season and then moved on to become the head coach at California State University, Chico. He led the Chico State Wildcats from 1970 through 1987 where his teams won five conference titles and he was named Coach of the Year four times. He was inducted into the College of the Redwoods Athletics Hall of Fame in 1995 and the Chico State Hall of Fame in 2001. Mathiesen also coached current Humboldt State head coach Tom Wood at South Fork High School before moving on to College of the Redwoods.
Coach Tregs took the reins of the Corsair basketball program in 1970. He would go on to coach CR basketball for 33 consecutive years and become the ‘dean’ of California coaches. He reached the milestone of 500 victories in his final season. His teams won two Golden Valley Conference championships during his tenure. Coach Tregs also served as the CR golf coach for many years. He was named the College of the Redwoods Outstanding Faculty Member in 1995-96 and he was inducted into the CR Athletics Hall of Fame in 2004 and the Chico State Athletics Hall of Fame in 1998.
Tickets for the Dinner and Sports Auction are $50 for a single person, $100 for a couple or $400 for a table. Tickets can be obtained by calling the CR Athletic Department at 476-4213 or 476-4242.
