Former Humboldt State University All-American runner Reed Elmore has been named track and cross country coach for College of the Redwoods.

Elmore, an Arcata high graduate and former runner for their program, begins coaching CR’s cross country team in the fall and the track team in the spring. Both teams will have men’s and women’s squads. The track team will only compete in middle and distance running events in its first year.
“There are a lot of good runners in this area who want to run for College of the Redwoods,” said Elmore, a 2002 HSU Athletic Hall of Fame inductee. “I’m walking into a great opportunity. I know we’ll get good numbers going for the teams next year.”

CR suspended its track and cross country teams in 2002 due to budget cuts.

Elmore is well-connected with the Humboldt-Del Norte High School League as he was the head cross country coach at McKinleyville High last year and served as the assistant track coach there for three years. He also was the assistant track coach for HSU for one year.

Elmore earned the distinction of being named an NCAA Division II All-American in track and field as well as cross country in the same year, 1992, while at HSU. In track he competed in the steeplechase, middle distance and distance events..

CR competes in the Golden Valley Conference.

“I’m excited to work with the athletes and to help them fulfill their goals,” Elmore said. “There are recent high school graduates who will come here as well as older athletes who want to compete. Some will leave here and want to go on to programs at NCAA Division I or II schools.
“I think we will be competitive in the first year in conference.”

CR Athletic Director Joe Hash said he is pleased to have Elmore at the college.

“The community is excited,” Hash said. “There is a need and high school coaches know this will provide a great opportunity for athletes not going to four-year colleges to compete. These sports are popular in this community. Reed is a well- known and respected name in this region.”

In addition to track and field and cross country, CR is adding a men’s soccer team starting in fall 2009. They join men’s and women’s basketball, softball, baseball, football, women’s volleyball and women’s soccer as CR’s intercollegiate sports programs.

Hash said that CR President Jeff Marsee, himself an All-American cross country runner at the University of Southern California, “has been a strong supporter of CR athletics. He became interested in bringing track and cross country back when he realized that this is a very good running area.”

Elmore can be contacted at the CR cross country/track office at 707-476-4597 or by e-mail at reed-elmore@redwoods.edu.
