The College of the Redwoods Law Enforcement Training Center will offer a Corrections Academy to train people to work at county jails.

The five-week Corrections Academy will take place Wednesday, August 19 through Friday, September 25. The sessions will take place at the main CR Eureka campus, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

According to academy coordinator Ken Cleveland, the training course will prepare people for a career in the county jail corrections field.

“This is a career opportunity,” Cleveland said, “which gives an individual the chance to enter into a professional field after five weeks of experience. It pays well and does not require a two-year or four-year college degree.”

Cleveland said that the starting monthly salary of a Humboldt County correctional officer is $2,289 and goes up to $3,245, or $38,940 a year. They are county jobs with excellent benefits, he added.

Students will learn how to incarcerate a person and how to maintain the incarceration including: the handling and booking of prisoners; how to search their bodies and cells; first-aid; feeding; assisting with court appearances and work details.

In addition, their will be daily physical fitness and skills training including cuffing prisoners, self defense, and dealing with gangs.

Surrounding County agencies have sent trainees through this program however, individuals not affiliated with any county sheriff’s office are able to put themselves through the training. Cleveland said, any person successfully completing the training will be attractive to sheriff’s offices because they will have already paid for their own training.

The cost of the five-week session is $270, which includes tuition and parking fees. A medical clearance from the student’s personal physician is required prior to attending. A flyer with the equipment requirements, medical clearance form and application can be found on the Law Enforcement Training Center website.
