Sending his team out with a bang is what College of the Redwoods women's soccer head coach Lyle Wilks wanted Friday night and that's what he got.
The lady Corsairs' offense exploded during their game with Shasta College, a 4-1 win. Sophomore Katelyn Giampaolo led the team in scoring with two goals.
”She only had two goals all season, so it was big for her,” Wilks said. “It's the last home game for the sophomores, so I wanted to send them on the attack.”
Tika Munoz scored the first goal off of an assist from Ryann Weaver in the first five minutes of the first half. She was followed by Steph Demarzi who rocked the ball into the net after an assist from Breon Hole.
Giampaolo scored the next two goals, the first of which was a one-on-one score on the Shasta goal keeper and the second off of an assist by Munoz. Shasta was able to score late in the game after a defensive breakdown.
The Corsairs are scheduled to travel to Butte College Nov. 9 to end their season.
”It was a great team effort,” Wilks said. “We travel to Butte next Thursday and hope to put a crimp in a few people's plans. Hopefully a win against Butte will have an effect on the conference standings.”
