Baseball Looks for Playoffs in 2008

The College of the Redwoods baseball team will take its first step toward the 2008 season this week as the Corsairs begin practicing for their season opener Jan. 25.

Although the Corsairs won’t have a finalized roster until Jan. 18, their first day of conditioning is Tuesday, and after a successful fall that showcased plenty of promising talent, eleventh-year head coach Bob Brown is looking forward to molding his young group.

“You’re never rebuilding at a junior college, it’s always starting over,” he said. “We were pretty much all sophomores last year with the exception of a few players, so this team is pretty inexperienced as far as college play. But I’m really looking forward to these next couple weeks and figuring out where we stand.”

As of now, the Corsairs stand with seven returners, and have several new additions to the roster that have their coach optimistic about the upcoming season.

Sophomore second baseman Michael Brandy has returned to Humboldt County to play for the Corsairs this year, following his freshman season at Santa Rosa Junior College.

CR will also have sophomore returner Tim Burwell back in the infield, while Dylan Hanson, who split time at second base last year, is expected to settle in behind the plate.

“We’re expecting good things and hopefully a lot of production out of those guys,” Brown said.

Incoming freshmen looking to make an impact will be former Eureka Loggers Jake Bingham and Zach O’Hanen, while Mike Wilson has yet to fully commit.

“Mike was with us all fall and did a great job for us,” Brown said. “We’re hoping he’ll stick around.”

The Corsairs also have a high-profile recruit still on the fence in Andre Miller, a junior college infielder out of Ohio, who has had offers from Division I schools on the East Coast.

“We have some guys with college experience, but it will be interesting to see how the rest of the guys respond,” Brown said. “These next couple of weeks will be very important in finalizing our roster.”

The Corsairs open the season Jan. 25 at home against Mendocino.
