College of the Redwoods’ spring semester enrollment is up 4.6 percent compared to spring 2007.

This increase reverses a trend of the last four years where spring enrollment declined compared to the previous spring.

The student headcount – which means all students taking at least one class – for spring 2008 in the CR District is 6,104, compared to 5,834 in spring 2007. The CR District stretches from the Oregon border to just south of Mendocino and includes: education centers in Crescent City and Fort Bragg; instructional sites in Arcata, downtown Eureka and Hoopa; and the main Eureka campus.

The CR Business Office projects that because of the enrollment increase, CR’s general fund will receive approximately $788,000 more than it did last year based on the state’s student enrollment funding formula and non-resident fee rates.

“We are very pleased that our enrollment, and consequently revenue, has increased over last year,” said CR Interim President Tom Harris. “Along with our newly unveiled administrative restructuring plan, which our business office estimates will save the college approximately $900,000 next year, this enrollment-driven funding increase creates a much more stable budget picture for next year. It translates to positive things for the educational experience of our students.”

In July 2007, the Business Office had projected what CR’s enrollment and state funding would be based on the previous five years of decreasing enrollment trends. Compared to those projections, CR’s 2007-2008 enrollment has resulted in a revised increased funding projection of $1.73 million for this current year compared to what the trend had been.

At the March 4 board meeting, the CR trustees were told that the CR Business Office expects the college’s general fund reserve will be 7.2 percent at the end of the fiscal year, June 30. At this time last year, CR’s reserve fund was under three percent.
