Home field did not play to the Lady Corsairs’ advantage on Wednesday, as they were swept by the Shasta Knights 12-1 and 8-0 in a Golden Valley Conference doubleheader.
“We’re not going to point any fingers,” said CR head coach Maggie White. “Shasta just played better – it’s as simple as that.”
In the first game, the Corsairs struggled to hit Shasta ace Mickey Eustance, who threw four innings with seven strikeouts before CR’s Mischa Meyer singled to center to spoil Eustance’s attempt at a perfect game.
Throughout the contest, Eustance displayed dominance in the pitching circle – hitting outside corners with her fastball and freezing CR batters with off-speed pitches.
“I was hitting my spots well,” Eustance said. “My changeup was working well and my fastball had good movement.”
CR also got hits from Correia Hanes and Kayla Throgmorton, who both went 1-for-2 in the game.
Defensively, errors continued to plague the Lady Corsairs, who committed four in the first game, all of which the Knights converted into runs.
CR’s Jessy D’Eliso pitched all five innings, striking out one batter while walking just three.
D’Eliso displayed good control in the circle, but Shasta had her number, getting 11 hits throughout the contest.
“I had good location, but they just seemed to have me figured out,” D’Eliso said.
In the nightcap, the Lady Corsairs continued to have problems at the plate, getting their lone hit from Hanes, who repeated her game-one performance by going 1-for-2.
Hanes’ hit came in the fifth inning to break up a no-hitter for Shasta pitcher Corrie Nishikida, who went the entire game for the Knights with seven strikeouts.
CR’s Steph Andrade threw five innings in the loss, walking 10 batters.
“We need to continue to work hard and try to minimize our mental mistakes,” White said. “We’ve just got to keep our heads up and make progress defensively.”
With the loss, CR dropped to 0-5 in the GVC and 2-22 overall, while Shasta improved to 6-2 and 25-11.
This weekend, the Lady Corsairs return to action when they travel south for GVC doubleheaders against Feather River (4-10) and Lassen (5-7).
