The purpose of this Personal Enrichment Learning Series is to invite you to our beautiful campus to continue your learning about various topics. There is no cost to attend these workshops so attend as many as you like. Feel free to bring your friends and family with you. No registration is required. Coffee and cookies will be provided from 5:30 – 6 p.m. and the session will take place from 6 – 7 p.m. in the designated rooms.

Tuesday, February 3rd (room 111)
“Adventures in Attending the Presidential Inauguration”
Speakers: Rachel Binah and Mina Cohen (with assistance of Partnership Scholar Students)

Rachel Binah, coastal activist and Democratic National Committee member, and Mina Cohen, adjunct art faculty at CR attended the historic inauguration of Barack Obama. They also took six high school students they mentor in the local Partnership Scholars Program with them. They will discuss their adventure and show a slide show.

“Images of America: Chinese in Mendocino County”
Speaker: Lorraine Hee-Chorley

The Chinese were instrumental in the development of Mendocino County in the 1800s, but little has been written documenting their contribution to local history. Lorraine Hee-Chorley has culled local archives and collections for a new book, and will be sharing photographs dating from the early 1800s to the 1970s.

“Sign Language and Music”
Speaker: Betsy Ford

Experience songs presented in American Sign Language and learn to sign a short song yourself. Betsy Ford has over 35 years experience in the field of ASL as a teacher, Emmy-winning TV producer, interpreter, newscaster, actor and more.

“A Passion for Plants”
Speaker: Chris Woods

How can we arrange our lives so that we are spending more and more time doing things that move us, inspire us, serve others, and bring us joy? In this illustrated lecture, Chris Woods will talk about the beauty of plants, gardens, landscape, travel, food and other things that help give a sense of meaning to life.

“Touring the Art Collection of Paris”
Speaker: Bob Rhoades

Bob Rhoades will give you a quick glimpse with selected commentary on treasures from the greatest art collections of Paris including the Musees de Louvre, D'Orsay, Pompidue, l'Orangerie, Rodin, Picasso, and Maillol.

Wednesday, March 25th (112)
“The Joys, Challenges and Lessons of Volunteering in New Orleans and Fort Bragg”
Speakers: Susan Larkin and Chuck Greenberg

Susan Larkin will share stories and observations of New Orleans three years after Hurricane Katrina. Susan spent a week recently volunteering in St. Bernard Parrish. Chuck Greenberg, the director of the local chapter of Habitat for Humanity, will give an overview and history of Habitat and will speak about the opportunities and joys of volunteering in our area.

“Huichol Indian Art and Culture”
Speaker: Larain Matheson

The Huichol Indians of Mexico are a 30,000 year old indigenous tribe from central Mexico's Sierra Madre mountains. Their art, visions, and ceremonies are interrelated. Larain Matheson will share her Huichol documentary and lecture about their culture.

“The Power of Persuasion: Insights on How to Leverage Your Influence”
Speaker: Geisce Ly

Do you have the ability to influence others? If you’re not sure or would like to become more influential, then this workshop is for you. Geisce Ly, Dean of CR, Mendocino Coast will share timeless advice and practical suggestions about how to speak with clarity and act with intention.

“Spring Wildflowers: Their Uses and Abuses”
Speaker: Teresa Sholars

Teresa Sholars will highlight interesting facts and tidbits about spring wildflowers, including identification, ecology, landscape value, edible and toxic characteristics, and medicinal uses.

“Getting Past the Financial Crisis: Making a Plan”
Speaker: Jerry Murphy

Has the financial news recently made your stomach ache? Will you be ready if the anvil drops? Jerry Murphy will get you moving in the right direction to avoid getting hit by flying debris. You can be ready if you have a plan and have put the plan in action.

Do you celebrate Cinco de Mayo with beer, chips, and salsa? Ever wondered why it's celebrated? The actual historical events could form the plot of a novel or a screenplay. Explore the fascinating story behind this popular Mexican holiday with Martha Racine Taylor, Professor of Spanish.

“The Process of Making Prose”
Speakers: Katherine H. Brown, Charlotte Gullick, Ginny Rorby, and Norma Watkins

Let’s talk nuts and bolts. When’s the best time to write? And where? What do you do to get started? How do you keep going when you don’t want to? What’s your source of inspiration? Outline or no outline? Mixed Pickles, a professional writing group, will share their ideas. Bring pen and paper for some writing exercises.
