Using a balanced outside-inside offense, Team Locals downed Team Legends 79-69 in the opener of the Pro-Am basketball league Monday at College of the Redwoods.
Colin Mason's smooth outside shooting -- he finished with a game-high 25 points, including five treys -- led the Locals, and complimented the inside power of Cy Vandermeer (18 points), Fred Hooks (11 points) and Aaron Hungerford (10 points).
The Locals went on a 10-0 run to start the game and built up a solid 38-20 halftime lead.
But the Legends, who had an ice-cold five points in the second quarter, came out strong in the second half.
Rodney Dickerson scored eight of the Legends first 10 points after intermission, and his hustle helped ignite Devin Peal and Jeremiah Ward.
Peal, who ended with a team-high 20 points, and Ward -- who made several nice assists and nailed a trio of treys as part of his 13 points -- helped the Legends narrow the gap to just three points, 58-55.
The Locals, however, responded to the challenge, as Hooks and Mason temporarily took over.
Hooks converted two free throws and slammed a dunk off an assist from Bill Zanze, and then Mason hit a jumper and a long 3-pointer, creating a 12-point lead that stood up until the end.
Next Monday, the Legends play Team Humboldt -- comprised of current Lumberjacks -- at 6:30 p.m., while the Locals face Team County -- including Kevin Johnson, Grayson Moyer, Antoine Johnson and Tim Pratt --in the 8 p.m. contest.
