College of the Redwoods gave up four runs in the eighth inning on a grand slam and lost to Butte 7-6 on Friday in the first game of a three-game Golden Valley Conference baseball series in Oroville.
CR, which was the home team because of a previous rainout, took a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning, but Butte closed the gap with a single run in the second and two more in the third to make it 4-3, which held until the eighth inning.
In the top of the eighth, Butte loaded the bases with a single, a walk and a hit batsman, and cleared the bases with a one swing of the bat to make the score 7-4.
“It was kind of an unlucky situation for us,” said CR head coach Bob Brown. “It was a deflating moment, but to our guys’ credit, we battled back.”
The Corsairs rallied for a single run in the eighth on an RBI single by Chris Gutierrrez and got a solo home run by Andrew Matyshock in the bottom of the ninth to cut the lead to one run.
“We swung the bats well today, but, unfortunately, lost another close game,” Brown said.
CR’s Cameron Wood continued swinging a hot bat, going 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI, while Gutierrez finished 2-for-3 with two-RBIs and a double.
The Corsairs had 10 hits in the game, including five for extra bases.
With the loss, Redwoods drops to 4-8 in the GVC and 5-18 overall.
The Corsairs will finish the series with a doubleheader on Saturday, starting at 11 a.m.
