After dropping the opener 9-3 to have its three-game winning streak snapped, the College of the Redwoods baseball team roared back in the nightcap to beat Shasta 9-1 and take a split in the Corsairs’ final home Golden Valley Conference doubleheader of the 2014 season at the Arcata Ballpark on Saturday.
The Corsairs, who have won four of their past five games, failed to capitalize on five Shasta defensive errors in the opener and could not overcome the Knights’ five-run top of the sixth inning off just three hits.
“We just didn’t come out with much energy and had some pretty listless at-bats,” said CR head coach Bob Brown. “You would think a team on a three-game win streak would have a little more confidence, but we were flat, and unfortunately in (the sixth inning) we had a couple mental breakdowns that cost us.”
CR starting pitcher Brandon Downey went five innings in the loss with four strikeouts and three walks, two of which came in the sixth.
The Corsairs had just five singles in the game.
“We just weren’t playing with an urgency and between games we got on them a little bit, and to the players’ credit, they responded,” Brown said. “I was proud of the way we came back and finished strong.”
CR starting pitcher Justin Hatch picked up his fourth win of the season in the nightcap, striking out six in eight innings of work, allowing only a solo run in the top of the second inning.
The Corsairs, who made only one defensive error in the two games, had nine hits in the second game with leadoff batter Ansel Cecil leading the pack, going 3-for-5 with a run scored, while Andrew Matyshock was 2-for-5 with a double, an RBI and a run.
CR had a 4-1 lead in the sixth inning and went on to plate five runs in the frame for a 9-1 advantage.
Hatch struck out the side in the eighth and closer Juston Frazier retired the ninth in order for the victory.
After the split, the Corsairs stand at 8-14 in the GVC and 9-24 overall and will finish the year on Wednesday at Lassen with a doubleheader.
