But no cigar -- for the third game in a row.
The College of the Redwoods baseball team lost to Butte 6-5 in 10 innings and then again 6-4 in the second game of a Golden Valley Conference doubleheader at Butte.
The Corsairs were swept in the three-game series by a total of only four runs.
“We had opportunities to win all three games,” said CR head coach Bob Brown. “But we played like at team without confidence and just weren’t able to close.”
The Corsairs (4-9 in the GVC and 5-20 overall) have six one-run losses this season, including four in extra innings, and have nine losses by two runs or less.
“We’re just not executing late and we’re not finishing,” Brown said.
CR’s Donald Robinson went 5-for-5 in the opener with an RBI and leadoff batter Ansel Cecil was 3-for-6 as the Corsairs led 5-3 in the top of the eighth inning.
Butte, however, rallied for a pair of runs in the eighth and broke the tie with a single run in the ninth to get the win.
In the nightcap, Redwoods plated three runs in the top of the third and another in the fourth for a 4-2 lead, but, in similar fashion to the opener, Butte scored three runs late (two in the seventh and one in the eighth) for the victory.
CR did not score after the sixth inning in either game.
The Corsairs play next in a doubleheader at home (the Arcata Ballpark) against Feather River on Wednesday.
