Bob Brown's Corsairs exhibit a lot of fight.
But like previous games, the College of the Redwoods baseball team was unable to keep up the momentum after a rally to tie the game 8-8 against Shasta, falling 11-8 on Monday afternoon in Golden Valley Conference action.
"The resiliency is consistently there," Brown said. "We rallied to come back but we lose the energy and momentum quickly. We need to learn how to be better in certain and tough situations."
After falling behind 4-2 heading into the bottom of the fifth inning, Ryan Stearns (2-for-4 with 3 RBI) drilled a double for two RBI tying the game at four. Fellow Corsair Mitch Provolt was able to drive in the go-ahead run with a single.
After getting a single run in the top of the sixth to tie the game at five, the Knights took the lead in the seventh when Mitchell Barsotti knocked in a run. Playing decoy on a pickle, Barsotti assisted in getting another run for Shasta before the side was retired, 7-5 Knights.
Shasta added another run in the eighth inning when Stearns -- coming from third base -- tried to cut off a grounder but unable to make the play.
In the home-half of the inning, however, the error bug took a bite out of the Knights.
CR's Jeremy Burroughs and Michael Stroup each got on base with singles with two outs. That's when Shasta's Cody McCary took center stage the wrong way.
The Corsairs'' Spencer Duggan and Spencer Brandon should have both been out on routine grounders. Instead, bad throws to McCary allowed them to reach first safely and in the process, bring Burroughs and Stroup home to make the score 8-7.
Stearns also had a routine grounder to the pitcher, but the throw forced McCary's foot to leave the bag allowing No. 23 to cross the plate for the tying run.
It was a brand new ball game, or, so it seemed.
In the top of the ninth, Shasta's Alex Lee got on base with a single before No. 27 rocked a double to left field. With one out, Kyle Conner was intentionally walked to load the bases in hopes of a double play.
It never came.
Derek Ward (who finished 2-for-5 with 5 RBI) roped a pitch deep toward the left-field foul line for a double, allowing all three runners to score. Redwoods did get an opportunity in the home-half of the final inning, but no dice.
"It was a great effort by my guys," Brown said. "Give Shasta credit, too. They got the clutch hits in the clutch situations."
However, the inability to finish and maintain any momentum gathered, weighs on Brown.
"We hoped they were going to get that on Feb. 3 (start of the season)," he said. "But it's very difficult to get that kind of consistency when we're not playing outside. Still, we can't use that as an excuse. We're still a work in progress. We're a 3-8 team, but we've been in all of those games."
Up next for the Corsairs is a three-game series with GVC foe Siskiyous starting with a noon single game on Friday. The two will meet on Saturday for a twinbill.
"Siskiyous has a very good closer," Brown said. "We have to establish momentum and keep it. We've struggled doing that, sustaining momentum. We need a consistent nine innings."
Notes: Shasta and Redwoods finished game two of Sunday's doubleheader on Monday with the Knights winning 8-5. The game was suspended in the eighth inning and finished before Monday's single game.
