College of the Redwoods starting pitcher Justin Hatch went six strong innings, allowing just three singles with seven strikeouts to pick up his first win of the season on Saturday, beating Siskiyous 8-4 at the Arcata Ballpark to help the Corsairs win the Golden Valley Conference three-game series.
CR, which split with Siskiyous in a doubleheader on Friday, started Saturday’s rubbermatch the same way as the previous day — shaky.
Hatch misplayed two bunts in the top of the first inning and walked a batter to load the bases with no outs.
Then, unlike Friday, when the Corsairs allowed four runs in the first inning, CR regained its composure and settled in.
Hatch struck out two of the next three batters, allowing only a single run, then went on to retire 12 of the next 15 batters.
“He kind of got himself into a little bit of trouble at the start,” said CR head coach Bob Brown. “But then he really settled down and was in the zone all day. I was very pleased with his effort today.”
CR reliever James Slade came on for three innings of relief, striking out three with two walks to help secure the victory.
After tying the game 1-1 in the bottom of the second on an RBI single by Brad Props, Redwoods scored two more in the third on RBI hits by Juston Frazier and Donald Robinson.
The Corsairs got some more clutch hitting in the fifth as Chris Guttierez and Cameron Wood each had two-out hits, helping plate two more runs for a 5-1 lead.
“That was a big inning for us when we got those two-out runs,” Brown said. “It was kind of a back-breaker, but we knew they’d push back.”
Siskiyous picked up two of its three hits against Hatch in the sixth inning, plating a single run, then scored two more in the seventh as Slade came on in relief, inheriting a walked batter, and later gave up a two-RBI double to make the score 5-4.
CR, however, got some much-needed insurance in the bottom of the frame, scoring three two-out runs on RBI singles by Dalton Pachano and Andrew Matyshock.
Eight different Corsairs had hits in the game and six different players had RBIs.
“It was a great win for our team,” Hatch said. “Guys are seeing it better at the plate and now it’s just a matter of time until we can put it all together.”
With the win, CR improves to 3-5 in the GVC and 4-15 overall.
Redwoods plays next in a three-game series at Shasta on Friday and Saturday.
