Justin Hatch came to the rescue again for the Corsairs.
Behind Hatch's seven shutout innings, the College of the Redwoods baseball team was able to get a road split, beating Shasta College 3-1 and falling in the opener 8-2 in Saturday's Golden Valley Conference doubleheader.
”Obviously, our back was against the wall after yesterday's game. The game started at noon, but we didn't start playing until 12:30,” CR head coach Bob Brown said. “We came out flat, but I got to give my guys credit because we were able to pull ourselves together.”
The Corsairs (4-7 GVC, 5-17 overall) dug themselves an early hole in Saturday's first game, falling behind 7-0 after just two innings. Redwoods starting pitcher Kevin Llamas only lasted one inning, giving up six runs in the bottom half of the first.
But Hatch, much like he did a weekend ago, came up big on the hill.
In his seven shutout innings, the Eureka native scattered six hits and struck out six while walking two.
Another Eureka native, freshman right-hander Caleb Lee, recorded the final two outs of the game to get the save.
Andrew Matyshock's two-run single in the top of the fourth inning proved to be the difference for the Redwoods. Chris Gutierrez drove in CR's run with an RBI double in the top of the first.
Redwoods returns home next weekend, hosting Lassen College (2-8, 2-19) in a three-game set at the Arcata Ball Park. Weather permitting, Friday's twinbill and Saturday's series finale are both scheduled to start at 11 a.m.
”We needed to get that one to stay in the mix with everybody,” Brown said. “Being 4-7 (in conference) right now, the Lassen series is a good chance for us to get to .500 (next weekend).”
