College of the Redwoods’ Brad Props, Ansel Cecil and Juston Frazier delivered three consecutive two-out singles in the bottom of the ninth inning and the CR baseball team scored three runs to beat Lassen 5-4 and sweep the Golden Valley Conference doubleheader at the Arcata Ballpark on Wednesday for its second and third straight wins.
CR cruised past Lassen in the opener 10-2 as starting pitcher James Slade went 6-and-two-thirds innings, striking out four with only four hits allowed for the win.
“It felt good,” said CR head coach Bob Brown, whose Corsairs swept a doubleheader for the first time this season and are on their first three-game win streak. “We’ve suffered a lot of heartbreaking losses at the end of games so it was great for our players to be able to experience the other side of that.”
Also for the Corsairs, Cecil was able to hit safely in both games of the doubleheader, extending his hitting streak to 16 games.
“He’s been the guy we’ve come to depend on,” Brown said. “He delivers time-in and time-out and he’s done it all year.”
In the opener, after allowing a single to Lassen’s leadoff batter, Slade didn’t allow another hit until the sixth inning, where he gave up three hits for two runs and was replaced by reliever Caleb Lee, who shut out the Cougars the remainder of the game.
CR scored four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning, taking advantage of two of Lassen’s five defensive errors in the game to take an 8-2 lead.
In the nightcap, Redwoods took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning off of three hits, but Lassen tied the game in the fourth with a three-hit inning of its own.
Then the Cougars broke the tie in the top of the sixth with a single run for a 3-2 lead, and added an insurance run in the top of the ninth, scoring on CR’s only defensive error of the doubleheader for a 4-2 advantage.
In the bottom of the ninth, Lassen made an out, then made a throwing error twice as the Corsairs got two base runners on with two outs.
Then Props and Cecil each hit RBI singles to tie the game and Frazier delivered the walk-off infield single between short and third and the Corsairs rushed the field.
“After the game I just wanted to let it sink in for minute and let them celebrate,” Brown said. “We’ve been on the other end so many times it was great to see the smiles on everybody’s faces. Now hopefully we can carry some of that momentum over to this weekend.”
With the sweep, the Corsairs move from the bottom of the GVC standings into fourth at 7-13 in conference and 8-23 overall and will play next in a home doubleheader against Shasta on Saturday at the Arcata Ballpark at noon.
